Welcome to our class!
This class was designed for adults who have always wanted to learn Spanish but due to work, family obligations and other commitments, have not been able to do so. While many might find learning a language intimidating, trust me when I say you can do this and it is never too late to learn!

You will be able to attend class remotely through Zoom and if unable to attend, you will also be able to access recorded lessons as well as class materials at any time and the cost of attendance is very economical.

The main goal of this class is to actually learn to speak Spanish. The class is extremely conversational but is done in an environment where you can feel free to make mistakes and ask as many questions as possible. This is a safe space where we can all learn together!

''Greetings! The first thing that you should know about me is that I LOVE teaching. The most rewarding thing for me is when I see students understand a concept that they were intimidated by and then realize the great potential they have to learn.
I have been teaching Spanish at the university level since 2014. During this time while completing my degree, my research focused on how adults over the age of 30 learn languages and how it impacts the brain. I realized during this time that many older adults would love to learn Spanish but never had the chance. This is why I created this class. It was also apparent that many individuals felt that the time had past for them to learn a language. This is not the case! You can learn to speak Spanish with confidence.
You should also know that I demand that my online classroom be a safe environment for us to learn together. Learning a language puts us in a very vulnerable position. Many of us have not been in a learning environment for a long time and we might feel intimidated by this. Please be assured that my classroom is an area where you will feel safe to make as many mistakes as possible without being belittled or reprimanded. Making constant mistakes is necessary when learning a language.
When it comes to questions, ask away! I love questions. Even if I have answered the question 10 times already, please ask it again. I want the material to make sense and I promise that questions never will bother me nor will I be frustrated with you if we have to keep working with a certain concept.
With all that being said; it would be a pleasure for me to have you in my class. If you're interested, please fill out the registration form and I will get in touch with you.''

''What Do Students Have To Say About The Class?''

''I highly recommend this class. Ben Jorgensen is an excellent teacher. He’s positive and encouraging and intuitive to the level of understanding in his classes. He doesn’t just teach rehearsed lesson plans regardless of student needs. He asks and invites questions and adjusts lessons and assignments as needed to help us master concepts & pronunciation. I also appreciate his focus on speaking, because my goal is to converse in Spanish, not just read & write. He purposefully creates a classroom atmosphere that is safe and encouraging as we practice speaking. This class really is the best!''

''It has been years since I was in a classroom setting and I was a little nervous about taking the class but Profe Jorgensen was great. The learning environment was fun and I never felt intimidated. I loved the conversations we were able to have with other class members which really helped in learning to speak Spanish. I also really liked that It was easy to ask questions if you didn’t understand Profe was very patient and made sure you understood the concept before moving on. I am definitely taking the next class.''

This course is fabuloso! I am a busy mom who works full time. This class was perfect for me. I was able to attend when I could, and when I couldn't course materials (including recordings) were available for me online. Even after the course ended. This saved me since my mother became extremely ill and required major surgery during the course, and I was her main care giver. In addition to this flexibility, Profe Jorgensen creates a unintimidating, positive environment for learning. Thank you Profe Jorgensen! I am really enjoying learning Spanish.

''I have been wanting to learn Spanish for several years. I used Duolingo but needed so much more. I needed the interaction and the ability to ask questions and speak the language more. I saw an ad come through FB for SCA and was definitely interested. I'm so glad I signed up! Profe Jorgensen actually called on the phone to discuss my Spanish level and get me in the right class. I have been so impressed with the knowledge Profe has of the Spanish language and the way he will stop a lesson just to address the question of a single person. He explains things until you understand them. I have loved taking these classes so much and will be starting my third class in January.

Online learning in classes has often been difficult for me in the past. However, with this class, I found that with the use of technology, clarity of teaching and excellence of the teacher, I was able to learn and really enjoy my online Spanish classes. I am now signed up for my 3rd class with Professor Jorgensen. The courses are excellent! The class pace allowed me as a working adult to put in the time that I had for the course. Some weeks I could only do what was necessary but when I had more time, I had plenty of material to really dive into learning. I enjoyed the interaction with the other students and was educated in the material. The Professor was very good. He kept the class balanced, was great about review and encouraged learning. I have highly recommended him to family, friends and colleagues.

I've had the opportunity to take Spanish classes from Ben Jorgensen for the past year. I started in his beginning class - not having ever taken Spanish before - and now I am in his intermediate/advanced class. Ben is a very patient teacher and relates to his students so very well. He teaches the foundation of Spanish grammar - which allows his students to build upon their knowledge and understanding of the language.
Classes are conversational, interactive and fun! No matter your age (I'm an old guy!), or level of proficiency you will have a great experience learning and loving the Spanish language in Ben's classes. I plan to continue as one of Ben's students. If you are interested in learning Spanish don't hesitate to sign up for one of Ben's classes - you will love it. Me encanta Español!

I have a busy schedule but still want to attend. What can I do?
  • Including class time, homework & speaking appointments the average student would be expected to dedicate between 3-4 hours total each week.
In what style are the classes taught?
  • My goal is for students to actually converse in the language and not just understand Spanish grammar. While I do take the time to teach clear and concise grammar principles combined with vocab, the end goal is always to use what is learned in class to communicate. The beginning of class usually consists of the introduction of a new principle and after everyone has asked questions assuring that they understand, we start speaking with that principle with classmates in small groups. While a textbook is used in all classes, its use is supplemental. In most language classes it is the opposite and the book is designed to be the primary teacher and through it you are introduced to new principles. I disagree with this teaching method. A textbook cannot answer specific questions or adjust an explanation to your learning style in the moment like I will do in class. I should also make it very clear that I love questions! Questions are essential to learning and at no point will I be annoyed or frustrated by questions, even if I have already answered them previously. Learning a language is a very vulnerable experience and you must feel comfortable and safe knowing that you can ask questions at anytime. In addition to speaking Spanish in class with your peers you will also be assigned speaking appointments with your classmates outside of class at a time that works best for you. For each speaking appointment you will be provided prompts to guide your conversations. None of these assignments are mandatory and you are simply invited to do what you can with your schedule.
What is the average age of students?
  • The average age is around 60 years depending on the section. The ages of our students range from 32 to 83. These classes are designed for individuals above the age of 30 with specific teaching methods implemented to help you retain what you learn into your long-term memory.
How much is tuition?
  • The cost for attendance is $432 per semester. If necessary your tuition can be paid in installments.
Is there a textbook?
  • Yes and it can be purchased for around $20. This same textbook will be used for all the beginning, intermediate and advanced classes. In other words, this will be the only textbook that you will need to purchase for all the classes.
